To be honest, we all know that programmer is in high demand in today’s world because almost every single industry is depending on software to run their businesses or at least to streamline their business process to some certain degree. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, software developer jobs are expected to grow 17% from 2014 till 2024. They categorize this growth as “much faster” than the average rate among other professions. So given the fact that we are surrounded by lots of opportunities Does that actually mean you can skip university? Learn a couple of programming languages on Google? And kickstart your journey to work as a programmer. Well it’s not impossible but it’s really hard. Because majority of the company, big or small still requires their employee to have at least a degree in computer science. I can totally understand that not everyone can pursue a computer science degree. Maybe because you’re now working full time as some other professions and you wish to switch your career and become a programmer but you just couldn’t afford to invest your time and money into a 3 years degree course. It’s just doesn’t really make sense. Trust me I really understand your situation but please don’t get disappointed first. And later on in this video I’m going to tell you a couple of things you can do so that you will be able to stand out from the crowd and increase your chances of getting a job as a programmer even without a computer science degree. Frankly speaking, judging the performance of a potential candidate by just looking at the academic qualifications is definitely inaccurate and insufficient. But why majority of the company still choose to do that? One of the main reasons is because these companies receives tons of resumes whenever they put up a job advertisement, and judging based on the academic qualifications is the easiest and fastest way to shortlist the applicant especially if you’re new to the industry. Another reason why company would prefer degree holder is because If you have a degree, you are actually telling the company that you have the needed self-discipline as well as strong determination to complete a 3 years degree course. Besides, computer science degree is not just about learning how to code as we have also learned about Project Management Customer Relationship Management and whole lot more throughout the course which is definitely a plus point for the company as well. Alright so now we know that getting a degree is quite important especially if you’re looking for your first job as a programmer. Like I said, I can totally understand that not everyone can pursue a computer science degree and that can be due to many reasons. But now the questions is, How can you stand out from the crowd if you don’t have at least a computer science degree? The very first thing that you need to do is to make sure you’ve learned the basics of programming properly. There’re a lot of free and paid contents online and you can search it easily via Google. After you’ve invested your time in learning how to code, the next thing you need to do is to figure out a way to make your resume slightly more attractive. It’s really not enough to just tell the company that you know how to build websites using HTML, CSS and Javascript. You’ll need to prove to them that you actually have the skills to build websites. And how you can do that? Is by building stuff. One of the perks of knowing how to code is that you have the ability to work as a freelancer. I know that most of the websites for freelancer are very competitive because they’re packed with experienced developers. But you can actually start off by telling your friends and families that you know how to build certain things. Such as websites or mobile apps. Even if you can’t find a client, you can always work on projects that interest you. For example you can build a web application that can convert PDF to JPG or perhaps you can build a mobile app that can convert the currency for you. By doing so, I’m pretty sure you will have a lot more points to be added in your resume and you’ll be able to find a job as a programmer in no time. Trust me, once you’ve successfully get your first job as a programmer It will be whole lot easier for you to find the next one in the future if it’s necessary. Alright I think that’s it guys!
