[Music] I want to introduce to you the “Student Consultant Program”. The “Student Consultant Program” is a unique program in Southeast Asia. In fact, Lingnan University are actually the initiators of this particular program. It’s an interesting idea. The idea is that students are actually trained to peer review faculty. The idea is that in doing so they will be able to enhance the faculty’s teaching skills and also the students themselves will get confidence in being able to discuss problems and issues in the classroom with the faculty. It stems from a concept which is basically developed in Canada called the “Student Voice Movement”. The Student Voice Movement says that the education process in universities should be a collaborative process between faculty and students working together. In other words, the students will have a voice in their education. Given the fact that the spotlight is on teaching performance worldwide because the fees that are being paid for tuition, particularly in the United States, Britain and Australia and so on, are quite expensive and parents expect that their sons and daughters are taught well. So this is a very… sort of relevant initiative. Basically what happens is that in Lingnan University, we train the students to be able to deliver feedback to faculty which is productive and constructive. Even if it is critical, it’s done in such a way that it doesn’t offend the faculty member. So the system works where the faculty member has to agree to volunteer to be a part of a partnership between the faculty and the student consultant. The student consultant by the way is paid for this work because they undergo various training features and also they have to be available. And what they do is the classroom is decided, the class which is going to be scrutinized or which is going to be reviewed is decided by the faculty member. The faculty member also will decide what aspects of this particular class that he or she wants the student to focus on. So the class takes place. The student will be in the classroom sitting in the corner. Every two or three minutes the student will be tapping away on his or her computer looking at various aspects of the performance of the faculty member during the teaching. Looking for things which may be good things, not always bad things, which may be very good things to be repeated. Things which perhaps could be enhanced and improved. The beauty of the system is this… that faculty members may think that they are doing a great job but maybe the students don’t. Faculty members also sometimes might wonder why is it that what I seem to be teaching doesn’t seem to be getting through to the students. Having a student consultant means that the students are actually in a position to see things to view the faculty member’s performance from a student point of view which may be very different from their own point of view. So the student is observing the dynamics of the classroom all the time. After the class is finished, each week, the faculty member and the students get together. The student consultant gets together with the faculty member I should say and they discuss what has happened in the classroom with a view to looking at things that could be done better and things that need to be reinforced. At the end of the arrangement which normally takes place over a semester, there is a final written report which is given by the student to the faculty member giving an overview of his performance. This is something which is an interesting initiative. It’s an innovative initiative in Southeast Asia. The faculty members who may sometimes at the beginning be a little bit self-conscious in having students reviewing their performance have to… a man or a woman, if it has been a faculty member. All of them have said, “This is very good. This is what we need”. In Lingnan University, it’s something that we will not only continue but we are looking for ways of improving the way we operate this. So that’s the Student Consultant Program.
