Hi there! My name is Elise Rayner and I’m the Marketing and Communications Specialist with GO Minnesota, the program for visiting international students. We are excited that you’re considering a study abroad opportunity at the University of Minnesota, and I hope that this presentation gives you a better picture of what life Is like at one of the world’s best research institutions in one of the best cities in the United States. Students often tell us that they love how we offer the quintessential U.S. college experience with integrated classes, American football games, and hundreds of other opportunities which we’ll get into in a bit. And here’s a fun fact for you: Goldy Gopher, our mascot, is consistently voted the best mascot in the country. But that’s not all we offer! We also happen to be the ninth most active public research university in the United States with over $940 million dedicated to research each year. And many of our programs are ranked in the top 20 globally by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, the Center for World University rankings, and US news. Another thing that we take pride in is our diversity. We have more than 7,200 international students on campus and we work hard to make sure that everyone feels welcome. Our visiting international student program allows you to be part of our community! The Minnesota Semester is our most popular program for visiting students. There are more than 135 areas of study to choose from, so you’ll always find classes in your major. And you’ll take those classes alongside degree-seeking students from the US and around the world. If you’re an engineering major, you may want to consider adding on an internship. This is a unique two-country program where you complete a semester or year at the U of M and then travel to Toronto, Canada to complete an 8 to 16 week customized internship placement. If you don’t have time to come for a full semester, you may want to consider our Summer Session. Just like the Semester program, you will be fully integrated into classes with degree students, and you have a wide range of classes to choose from. When students first arrive on our campus, they’re often pleasantly surprised by our great location. We’re the only Big 10 University located in a major metropolitan area. Our campus is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River and in the middle of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. With a combined population of over 3.5 million, the Twin Cities are ranked among the safest in the country and they offer easy access to theater, music, professional sports teams, and more. And it’s easy to access what the Twin Cities have to offer because of the great public transit networks on campus and around the cities. For example, you can take the lightrail train directly from the International Airport to campus. Or you can also take the lightrail and city buses to almost every popular destination in the Twin Cities including the Mall of America for amazing shopping, or US Bank Stadium to watch the Minnesota Vikings football team. Around campus you can hop on one of the free campus commuter buses and get to class quickly and safely. The other nice thing about our location is that surrounding campus are quaint, student friendly neighborhoods such as Dinky Town offering theaters, restaurants, cafes, and shops to enjoy. Here’s another fun fact for you: Minnesota has more shoreline than Florida, California, and Hawaii combined! We have over 10,000 lakes which makes for great outdoor recreation opportunities year-round. In addition, our state’s central location in the heart of the U.S. means that you have easy access to other great cities. The Minneapolis – St. Paul Airport is just 30 minutes from campus and it offers multiple non-stop flights to international destinations in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. No matter what time of year you arrive, there will be plenty to see and do. We are proud of the fact that we enjoy all four seasons and can stay active outdoors all year round. As we say in Minnesota, “there is no bad weather, only bad gear!” And don’t worry, if you’ve never seen snow before, we can help you pack the “right” gear. Studying abroad is both exciting but it can also be a bit scary. We get it. All of the GO Minnesota staff members have studied abroad ourselves. Therefore, we’ve designed our office to offer you the best support you need, when you need it. One of the most important areas of support we offer is with course selection and registration. We guide you through the process from beginning to end to make sure you find the classes that you need. Once you arrive on campus we connect you to classes, professors, and support staff to guarantee you have a successful academic experience. And we assist you with housing. Students live in furnished apartment style self-catering University-run housing. You can have a private or shared room.Or you can choose to live off-campus in private accommodation if you’d like, but you are responsible for making those arrangements. We connect you to the range of amenities on campus, as well, including the rec center, movie theater, health center, Student Union, libraries, and student groups… Over 800 to be exact! And with so many to choose from we encourage everyone to get involved. If you’re a sports fan, we can connect you to the many great opportunities available on campus and around town: American football, ice hockey, basketball, and others are all played on campus. As a student, you can get free or reduced rate tickets to games. And the Twin Cities also offer professional sports: the NBA, NHL, NFL. In fact, we hosted the Super Bowl in 2018! And if that’s not enough we also provide activities and excursions for our students free of charge. Such as trips to Duluth to see Lake Superior and go hiking, tickets to theater and music performances, professional sports games, cross-country skiing and more! But how much does it all cost? The Semester program fee includes tuition for 13 to 16 credits while the Summer program fee includes tuition for 12 credits. The housing and meals cost is an estimate for on-campus double occupancy room, in a dorm, with three meals per day. Ready to apply? Great! Join us! Thank you for your time, and please visit our website for more details. We look forward to welcoming you to campus very soon!
